In 1061, the local lady of the manor, Richeldis, was taken in a vision by the Virgin Mary to the house in Nazareth where the Angel Gabriel had announced the news of the birth of Jesus. Mary asked Richeldis to build an exact replica of that house in Walsingham. This is how Walsingham became known as "England's Nazareth." Although the original shrine was destroyed at the Reformation in the 16th century, the 20th century saw the restoration of pilgrimage to Walsingham as a regular feature of Christian life in these islands, and indeed beyond. Each year many thousands of Catholics, Anglicans, and the Orthodox journey here on pilgrimage. You can read more of the history here and find information about the various local churches.
